Telecommunication is changing our society rapidly and students need to keep up to date with these developments. For example:
- Over 22 million mobile phones are currently in use*
- 64% of Australian households (5.1 million households) have home internet access; 31% dial-up; 68% (3.5 million) broadband internet access*
- 61% of people aged 15 years and over accessed the internet at home during 2006-07*.
- The internet is home to 70 million weblogs
- Wikis, or collaborative mass-authoring tools, are replacing information sources
- The growth of mobisodes - short episodes of TV programs available on mobile phones
- Podcasts are replacing radios as a downloadable feed of the program
- The advent of personalised start pages, allowing people to personally organise and publish information.
- People are increasingly interacting with one another digitally, through virtual global communities, instant messaging, emails and SMS's
